Onórë Mehyinórëo (Estados Unidos Mexicanos)

Eso es mi regalo para todo el amable pueblo Mexicano!

This was top wanted map I’ve been asked for quite some time, but honestly I was a little bit afraid to do it. All this Nahuatl names posed a real hardship for me and I’m not sure if I got those right, (sorry!) but I tried the best I could with the etymologies I researched. Spanish names, when they were referring to people, were left untouched and some others were pretty cool in their orthographic equivalents (Huaxiacca, Tyapan, etc.)

I’d like also to thank deeply Eruyome who commented on the US map about the New Mexico composition and thanks to her, I stuck here with Mehyinórë.

Well, nothing new so far. Those are the real names. Some look like Quenya (Querétaro), some sound like Quenya (Sonora) and some might even mean straightway Quenya (Sinaloa). Spanish is definitely a key language that helps Quenya studies!

A place for stones and a place for trees, a place for fishermen and for warriors; Mexico got pretty good names for its states.

Quenya words ∈ world languages

Well, he’s the guy who brought the compilation you’re about to see to life! It’s a hell of an idea, and very interesting for the ones who love Quenya and languages in general (me….guilty ). Read below and you’ll see that there is more in Quenya than meets the eye!

Hasn’t it ever happened to you, that when you come upon certain Quenya words, you realize the same word exists in your language, or in a language you are familiar with?

It has happened several times to me, so I decided to take Helge Fauskanger’s Quenya-English Wordlist and go word by word to find out which words have a meaning (not necessarily the same one, mostly not) in languages I am familiar with.

I found many words existing mostly in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan and Latin, languages I have some knowledge of. Thanks to Milla Leskinen, who helped me by identifying words in Quenya that exist in Finnish, to Celebrinthal for identifying words in Polish, Japanese and German, among others, to Metaflora for Hungarian words, to Emma Flacking, for Swedish and Norwegian, to John Karpo for Greek and to Kastytis Zubovas for Lithuanian.

J. R. R. Tolkien knew Finnish and Latin, so Quenya words existing in these languages probably are not coincidences, whether they have the same meaning or not, but most likely, Professor Tolkien wasn’t aware of all the word coincidences we have found. I have not included the matches with the English language, since no doubt Tolkien knew if this Quenya word existed in English. Occasionally I used a dictionary to double-check the word’s definitions.

I first list the words in Quenya, followed by language and the meaning it has in it. I hope you enjoy it, and of course, if you read Helge’s wordlist and find words in languages not listed here, or words missing, or any corrections you would like to make, please contact me!

Finally, towards the end of the writing of this entry, I found an essay called “Similarities between natural languages and Tolkien’s Eldarin”, by Roman Rausch, in which you can find, among many other interesting things, a list of matches between Noldorin/Sindarin and Welsh and Irish, and a list of matches in other languages, but in which the meanings are very similar or at least related.

Is that it? NO….there’s much more! There’s the whole long list yet! Check for yourselves there, at his site, where the quote was taken from. HERE!

See? And yet once in a while, I still hear people say that Quenya is not real, it’s a fake language…..oh boy…..

Aranië Italyanna (Repubblica Italiana)

A long long time ago, someone asked me this map. I was digging up some old comments last month while in vacation and found request. Here, in Quenya101, everything is done for the fans and if something is asked, I’ll personally strive to achieve it (be it difficult or not) provided it’s not an impossible feat. It may take a long time, but in the end, you’ll have it! The Italian guy who asked me is a living proof of that and it serves as a gift for all Italian Tolkien fans! Benvenuti in Italia!

I don’t know Italian yet (I’m saving it to learn as my 7th language) but the names were not THAT hard as I expected. Everything was Latin related and mostly came from names of ancient tribes.

You can check all the previous maps already “converted” to Quenya by clicking all the links available in Eldar Ambaressë section! Check if your country is there! If not, well don’t be shy, just ask!

Where do your choices lead you, Bilbo?

“And Bilbo found a ring and he returned it to its owner, a vile creature called Gollum.”

Imagine that! I don’t know which kind of story we would have if Bilbo had done that and this is just an illustrative way to show the important role our own choices play in life.

If there is a power we all have at the same amount is: free will. Eru gave it to all (do you really REALLY believe in a predetermined life where fate won’t let you escape any final outcome? Oh NO!) and we should start thinking deeply what you’re doing with your choices. Are you choosing wisely your friends? Your career? Are you choosing good deeds or bad? Are you following a good path?

Why the hell am I talking about that here? A couple of weeks ago, I found a someone’s precious in an ATM. The person had lost its tablet and I couldn’t imagine how frustrated that person was (or would be when he realized it) about losing such a particular item.

And here comes the choice role I’m talking about. I checked some things in the tablet and realized the person spoke German! Contacted him by email, we met and I gave his precious back. I have already lost my wallet with my ID and all my papers in it a few years ago and a homeless guy who found it, called me up and returned me that. I was so so so thankful! Now it was my turn to be on the other side!

Today Zmago, the Slovenian guy who won’t need to buy another tablet and make all his business projects again, invited me up to a pub where we had a great fantastic time. I met his friends and business partners, Beitia (from Basque Country) and Marcos (from Brazil) and instantly I saw what an excellent choice I have done. The guy is awesome, many things in common and certainly I got a new friend where I wasn’t expecting to find one! I had just found a tablet but with it, a huge choice and I’m happy to have chosen wisely!

For all Hobbits out there…let’s behave ourselves and spread some goodness in this vast World of ours, huh? The road goes ever on and on and where it may lead, sometimes it’s totally up to you and you only!!! Choose wisely!

Rosa das Rosas Quenyanna

Following the line of medieval poetry and also as a request/challenge from Davi de Souza, today we bring you today a 13th century poem, written in Galician-Portuguese, called Rosa das Rosas. The post will be conducted in Portuguese, but some English information will be given for our non-Portuguese speakers.

Esse poema foi escrito no século XIII e encontra-se nos códices das Cantigas de Santa Maria, supostamente escritas por Afonso X, o sábio, rei de Castela e Leão, localizados na península Ibérica onde, hoje, ficam Espanha e Portugal. No total, as Cantigas englobam 427 composições, sendo a Rosa das Rosas a décima.

Rosa das rosas e Fror das frores,
Dona das donas, Sennor das sennores.

Rosa de beldad’ e de parecer
e Fror d’alegria e de prazer,
Dona en mui piadosa ser
Sennor en toller coitas e doores.

Atal Sennor dev’ ome muit’ amar,
que de todo mal o pode guardar;

A maior dificuldade dessa tradução foi, assim como no Lamento de Deor, encontrar a melhor tradução da linguagem medieval pro inglês. Mas isso foi possível e aqui está o resultado final!

Inwinórë (England)

“Remember, remember…the Fifth of November.”

And to help you remember that, in celebration of the date, I have prepared a gift map as usually we do here in Quenya101. Here it is England map etymologically translated into Quenya. There are many Tolkien fans from UK (the most renowned one among them, Paul Haigh) and they really deserve this map!
