Your Love is Evil Quenyanna

OndoAiya! Welcome back to Quenya101, after holiday season. My first post of this year will be a more personal one. Two months ago, something new started on my life. I finally gathered courage to ask of my best friends to be my girlfriend. She was mentioned here before, we met because of Tolkien and we have always been good friends. She’s also a Tolkien enthusiast, I always use her Quenya nickname and is, now, learning Quenya! Who knows if someday she won’t be part of Quenya101 staff?

This song I translated has been part of our friendship, specially for the first few lines, as I was actually seeing her beautiful smile day after day…and it turned out she was not just a little boy feverish dream. Even though the song is not essentially romantic or cute, it deserves a translation just for the first lines. And also because we both enjoy Avantasia, the fantastic power metal band responsible for this song.

Day after day I see her smile
If you could see her through my eyes
You wouldn’t call her a little boy’s fever dream

How can you tell my feelings wrong
How can’t you see it’s growing strong
Silicone angel you are my fantasy

Your eyes are cold
Pale are your skin and your lips
Pale is your desire

You are the one
Day after day I’m under your spell
And you look away
Your love is evil

You are the one
Day after day
You are the rain
I’m the parade
Though your love is evil

I feel how you watch my every move
Why do you lie to me and you
Your languidness shining through a crystal wall

Nobody would touch you like i would
Nobody would stop us
If I could reach out through the glass
Pretend you don’t hear my call

You are the one
Day after day
under your spell
And you look away
Though your love is evil

You are the one
Day after day
You are the rain
Still I’m the parade
Though your love is evil

Ad Mortem Festinamus Quenyanna

llibrevermell_fxxii_rv_ed1

So…. I’m enjoying medieval poetry translation. This time, let’s go with……Latin! This song, Ad Mortem Festinamus, is part of the  Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (“Red Book of Montserrat”), a 14th century book containing medieval songs, located in the Monastery of Montserrat, located in Spain. This song belongs to a special genre of art named Memento mori (“Remember your mortality”…..totally not Elvish, huh?), that has exactly this purpose: to make you remember you’re a mortal being.

This song’s name means “We rush into death”….. no explanations needed, I guess.

It also has been recorded several times recently. For instance, I know Qntal’s version, which doesn’t please me so much, and Gothart’s, that is fantastic. So, I present you, Ad Mortem Festinamus Quenyanna!

Ad mortem festinamus

Quenya Version

Merin tecë i ulco Ambaressë
rucin i lúmello autuva ve vanwa
I lúmë utúlië cuivien
I cendelessë qualmeva,
I cendelessë qualmeva.

I sinta coivië tuluva mettan,
Qualmë tulë arrato nó polil savë,
Nancaris ilqua
ar umis órava,
ar umis órava.

Nalvë rimpa mir qualmë
Ámë hauta úcarë.
Ámë hauta úcarë.

Qui umil nanquerë ar nal ve hína,
ar umil vista coivielya,
úval tenta, ve alassëa,
i Aranië Eruva,
i Aranië Eruva.

Talumë i hyóla lamya, Aurë Namiéva
utúlië. I Námo tana immo
ar canas hínalyar Aranieryan,
mal i húna Angamandonna,
mal i húna Angamandonna.

Nalvë rimpa mir qualmë…

Original Latin Version

Memento_Mori25Scribere probosui de contemptu mundano
ut degentes seculi non mulcentur in vano
iam est hor surgere
a sompno mortis pravo
a sompno mortis pravo

Vita brevis breviter in brevi finietur
mors venit velociter quae neminem veretur
omnia mors perimit
et nulli miseretur
et nulli miseretur

Ad mortem festinamus
peccare desistamus
peccare desistamus

Ni conversus fueris et sicut puer factus
et vitam mutaveris in meliores actus
regnum Dei beatus
regnum Dei beatus

Tuba cum sonuerit dies erit extrema
et iudex advenerit vocabit sempiterna
electos in patria
prescitos ad inferna
prescitos ad inferna

Ad mortem festinamus…

And, for those like me that can’t read Latin:

English Version

I want to write of the evil in the worldcementeriodelaRecoleta-Buenos Aires
lest the time should pass unused.
The time has come to awake
in the face of death,
in the face of death.

The short life soon will end,
death comes faster than you would believe.
It destroys everything
and has no mercy,
and has no mercy.

We rush into death,
let us refrain from sinning,
let us refrain from sinning,

If you don’t turn back and become like a child
and you don’t change your life,
you won’t go into, as a happy one,
the Kingdom of God,
the Kingdom of God.

When the trump resounds, Judgement Day
has come. The judge appears
and calls the chosen ones to his Kingdom
but the damned to hell,
but the damned to hell.

We rush into death…

Hope you enjoyed it, namárië!

Anga Wendë – Cuilë Epanqualë (Iron Maiden – Live After Death)

This is a tribute to a great (saying just great is not enough) band coming from British lands, the same lands where once dwelt Father Tolkien.

Anga Wendë

Recently, I have rediscovered Iron Maiden and all its potency, melodies, style and the huge impact they had in the 80s’ and the whole metal scenario. I’m a Metal devotee, (as most Tolkien fans are) and undoubtedly Iron Maiden is a band we all should pay tribute. Our everyday Metal was influenced by what they built in their golden era.

You certainly know how we do things here! We do them in Quenya big time and with that in mind, let’s have a review of a great live album, Live After Death:

Anga Wendë Cuilë Epanqualë

Released in 16 Quellë XIV 113 , Live After Death (a.k.a. Cuilë Epanqualë in all elvish lands) brings us the Anga Wendë World Slavery Tour which was one of the longest and most extensive tours ever undertaken by a rock band. Lasting from 7 Yávië 112 to 44 Lairë 113, and visiting lands as East Beleriand, Forlindon, Ossiriand, Lothlórien, Falas, Nargothrond, Doriath and Valinor, the show included a mammoth setup that replicated the intricate ancient Avarin iron_maiden_powerslave_tourscenery of the Moltúrë album cover. As a “hantanyel” to the hundreds of thousands of fans who packed arenas the world over, the double-disc live set Cuilë Epanqualë was issued in XIV 113. Disc one is comprised of selections from a four-night stand at Alqualondë Long Beach Arena, with disc two comprised of performances from Nargothrond Hammersmith Odeon. The album is essentially a best-of of sorts, since most of their singles released up to this point are featured in all of their high-decibel glory: “Tárë Rámar,” “2 Tittalúmi Tenna Endelómë,” “I Mehtar,” “Wilië Icaruswa,” “I Nótë Hravanwa ” “Á Yurë Ambonnar,” and “Yúran Léravë”. Also included are such strong album tracks as “Rúsehína,” “22 Acatya Nómë,” “Híni I Sauro,” “Fairë Lindalello,” “Nai Airë Esselya,” “Anga Wendë,” plus their two epics, “Moltúrë” and “Quetta Yára Ciryamova,” making it a near-complete overview. Cuilë Epanqualë is easily one of heavy metal’s best live albums.

Rosa das Rosas Quenyanna

Following the line of medieval poetry and also as a request/challenge from Davi de Souza, today we bring you today a 13th century poem, written in Galician-Portuguese, called Rosa das Rosas. The post will be conducted in Portuguese, but some English information will be given for our non-Portuguese speakers.

1000px-Military_flag_of_Portugal

Atal Sennor dev’ ome muit’ amar,
que de todo mal o pode guardar;
e pode-ll’ os peccados perdõar,
que faz no mundo per maos sabores.

Devemo-la muit’ amar e servir,
ca punna de nos guardar de falir;
des i dos erros nos faz repentir,
que nos fazemos come pecadores.

Esta dona que tenno por Sennore
de que quero seer trobador,
se eu per ren poss’ aver seu amor,
dou ao demo os outros amores.

For our non-Portuguese readers, on this link you can find a pretty good English translation.

An polis cimë ilyë ulca;
Ar polis avatyarë ilyë úcarindor,
Ontien ammára Ambar cuilen.

Orë men melë se ar núro ná vórimavë,
An polis varya me lantallo;

A Maia called….SpongeBob SquarePants

Ok, here is the thing: I’m drunk. You can see that by the title of this post (I guess). Today is Beerday and I’m really celebrating it the way it should be. As a matter of fact, while celebrating Beerday everybody knows one must sing aloud incoherently any stupid song that one has in mind when being drunk, because it is funny and because…yeah, because!

So, to make things shorter as they are already too long, here comes SpongeBob SquarePants (but you know…in QUENYA! because that’s what we do here….things in Quenya)

Ma nalyë manwa, híni?

Ná, ná, hesto!

Umin polë hlarital

NÁ, NÁ, HESTO!

A man marë yávessë nu i ëar

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

Ve hwan ar malina ar yo ecca naryë

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

Qui úsanalë ëarello ná i nat meril

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

Sië á tulë ciryanna ar á lilta ve lingwë

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

Manwa? HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

HwandeCalio TéracornaLanni

PS: SpongeBob SquarePants is not a Maia who lives under the sea and I foresee a huge hangover tomorrow.

Now, we come to the 2nd edition of the White Tree Awards to celebrate and recognize the best posts since 11/30/11 until 10/19/12. You know, it’s like the Oscars…but cooler :D :D ….everything tastes cooler when Tolkien and Quenya is involved!

Best People’s Choice

Elvish Calendar now easier than ever!

Counting days with 1 click! It’s a hell of a tool & people have chosen it!

Well, well…

this is it. White Tree Awards 2 ends but before the final curtain closes, I’ll give you an extra pass for the after party! :D Check the personal highlights of Quenya101 staff:

Erunno says: “I’d like to congratulate Ondo & Erutulco for the amazing ideas, posts, contributions to develop and enhance the quality of Quenya101. This place would lack many thing without you two! When voting for the Best Ones here, I was sure injustices would be made but we gotta choose and here are my personal choices. They are all about originality and execution. Newton and Calendar really deserve the prize!”

Ondo says: “I simply loved Erutulco’s Into the West translation. And the Calendar! It’s a tie between both. As we have to choose only one…The Calendar. Why? It’s totally original, different from everything we’ve seen before! I’m also tied between Elvish Heraldry and Quendi & Eldar. Damn, let’s go with Heraldry as it’s something I love. Damn, this is hard!”

Erutulco says: “Very tough! But here’s my decision: Huge tie between Ondo’s I Lindë Helcë ar Nárëo (Asta II) & (Isaac Newton + Physics)² X Quenya = !!!. I’d like to vote both, but since we can only one, mine goes to Newton’s laws. Mostly because of the creativity of such a task, with the Sarati and being so perfectly done. The ones I love most from Erunno are Quendi & Eldar and Tengwar Kanji. I choose the latter for its originality.”
