John Ronald Rootytoot Reagan … Tolkien (or something like that)

Gandalf Jackson

As we have already exposed all the known details about his great work the Silly Marillion, today we’re gonna read more about this peculiar author so renowned. Maybe you think you know one thing or two about him (or three or eleven or thirty-six hundred things) but get ready for the unbeknownst knowledge taken from Internet!

Who is Tolkien?

Famous director, author, dictator, actor, politician, biologist and hockey player(as well as frequent mentor to Batman’s younger cousin Manbat), J.R.R.R.A.B.C.D.E.F.X.Y.Z. (John Ronald Rootytoot Reagan Ass-Bitch Chix Don’t Even Frickin’ Xylophone Yurie Zauron) Tolkien is the tolkien_j_r_r-19721214019R.2_png_300x436_q85historian who discovered that the true history of the earth was being covered up by the world’s governments, who did not want the general population to know of the existence of dragons, elves, hobbits, magic, etc, in order to maintain control over their people.

Tolkien’s greatest invention was the fantasy industry. Without his influence online collaborative games would all be about spies or snowboarding or something and goths would have to dress in pastel casuals. But thanks to Tolkien, gamers, goths, hippies, occultists and heavy metal bands have a rich reference-iconography of dark overlords, wizards, orcs, funny lettering, dungeons, bad fashion and awesome films to smoke dope to, allowing contact with the real world to be minimized.

Biography

Tolkien was born in 1066 to a hobbit awkwardly named Tolkien’s mom. He was given birth to in a chopshop amid the sprawling grasslands of central New Jersey. A prophecy told of his birth as the fruits of an Inuit and yet another hobbit. His legitimate mother found this odd as she was never married to an Inuit. The prophecy also said that within 5 hours of his birth he would successfully fight for hobbit rights among the population of New Jersey, and he did. A precocious child, he also learned to speak Welsh, Japanese, French, and Klingon within twenty minutes of his birth. He would go on to master the Inuit language, and is personally responsible for forty-seven of their eighty-two words describing snow.

Craving for more? Really? You got a strange taste, mate! It’s ok anyway. Sometimes, we all need to laugh a bit and not take things too seriously. So, the good, the bad and the ugly (jokes) you can find not here, nor here and neither here. It’s right…..there!

Valar Poker

Poker_FaceCzysteMaybe you’re not a lover of playing cards, but one must recognize playing cards are the most famous and common card game there is out there and it’s been around for a long time now. There are countless regional variants of different games, different ways to play them with different amount of cards, but from Alaska to New Zealand, from Vladivostok to Easter Island people know and play Poker which is worldwidely spread, analyzed and written about. Recently I bought some well adorned playing cards from the Bicycle Alchemy 77 & Anne Strokes collection and by mere chance I stumbled upon a creation of Gerwell which introduces the Valar & Maiar to the Poker game.

Gerwell’s playing cards art (shown below) is lovely, giving the Valar & others an unique style. If you collect playing cards, play them a lot and love the game, this is an interesting item to acquire (printing or something like that). I’ll consider that eventually!

The only detail I would change in this set of playing cards is…..Tengwar! (Of course…you know, it’s me!) It wouldn’t be practical but it’d be damn cool to have Poker cards with number written in Quenya and perhaps custom tengwar for the JQK cards. I can’t think of custom Tolkien-related suits but it must not be hard to come up with some. Silmarilli could be used instead of Diamonds, Two Trees instead of Clubs…wait! It seems I can think of some custom suits! :)

Anyway here the images which Gerwell used to create the Valar Poker cards:

Praise belongs to Gerwell! If you want more info about this Valar Poker cards, check his Tumblr!!!

Nai i cantëa nauva ólë

Nai i cantëa nauva ólë!

In celebration of May, the 4th (be with you) Quenya101 proudly institutes the tradition of honoring such a prestigious saga, Star Wars. It’s also of my passions and it’s not that hard to make cool crossovers with it and Tolkien. It’s all interconnected, you know.

This day, I’ll bring you Vader! The one and only. The most iconic character of all, the one who captivated people’s attention and fear from the early minutes on. Below, check all the immortal quotes of Anakin Skywalker a.k.a. Darth Vader a.k.a. Luke’s daddy!

…and…Ainulindalë…ends…

The end.

This is the end, my final friend, the end. Ainulindalë Quenyanna is officially finished. I took some prolonged vacations (too much time to be honest) of this project of mine, but now, here it is….THE end.

I thank everyone who is with me since its beginning, who is enjoying the ride and who liked the images, the text, the audio, it’s all there for you!

I’m happy and sad now. It’s fantastic to end such a complex project. It was tough and tiring sometimes. We all know how modern life sucks in any time we might have. I’m happy to have this mission accomplished (I didn’t know when I started if I could make it till the end) but it’s sad to know that this baby is never gonna be nurtured anymore. It’s already grown up! It’s gone! (Yes, my brain is weird sometimes….to quote Almárë at her Tumblr)

So, stay tuned at Ainulindalë section as there are a couple of paragraphs still to be written down and their audio to be released.

…and here is the final page of Ainulindalë Quenyanna…

Tengwar English Mode VS Tengwar English Mode

Now that we have extensively had posts about Tengwar Fonts and now that I’m 0% sick as I was a couple of days ago, let’s take a look at the most debatable and popular Tengwar Mode of all…..ENGLISH mode!

teng_general_eng_phon_cons

As you may be aware, English is a language spoken by many many living creatures in the Milky Way. Among them, there are many who not only speak the language, but is fond of reading books in English. Not so surprisingly, those English readers (most of the time) enjoy reading Tolkien books (after all he’s pretty good). AND……..somewhere down the road, they fuse what Tolkien created with their own language, English. There we have it! Tengwar English Mode.

But that’s not new! Tolkien himself developed Tengwar English Mode. It was his mother tongue, so it’s only natural he would experiment his newly begotten alphabet with what he spoke on a daily basis.

Gondor…we have a problem!

teng_general_eng_orth_cons

Tengwar English Mode is crooked in its essence. Ok, let me add the words “in my opinion”, otherwise Morelen may have a stroke or something. What I mean is: Tengwar is a beautiful glove which fits perfectly and naturally right and left hands made of five fingers (i.e. Quenya and Sindarin), now…when you’re trying to fit that same glove in a cloven hoof….I think you got the picture. That’s Tengwar English Mode. It’s pretty good but, I don’t know….you know….

flag_of_gondor_under_sauron_by_lordbojangles-d32ra7yI, myself, started with Tengwar English Mode. A decade ago, at college. It was the introduction for me. It was what I learned first when I knew little about the real deal. When I realized there was more, there was Quenya; everything made sense and I never looked back. Do you wanna see it for yourself?

Below, I’ll share with you an interesting essay talking about the differences between Tengwar English Mode and Tengwar English Mode! (Wait, is there two now?) Yeah…kind of…..See? A five-finger glove for a cloven hoof!

Tengwar – General Use: English

There are two distinct methods with which the General Use is applied to the English language. One method is to follow the spelling used in the Roman alphabet, transliterating the numerous peculiarities of English orthography with fair accuracy. The other is to reproduce each sound of the spoken language, letting each tengwa represent an English phoneme. The two methods have on occasion been referred to as orthographic andphonemic spelling, and these terms will be used here.

As Tolkien points out,

There was of course no ‘mode’ for the representation of English. One adequate phonetically could be devised from the Fëanorian system. The brief example on the title-page [i.e. DTS 5] does not attempt to exhibit this. It is rather an example of what a man of Gondor might have produced, hesitating between the values of the letters familiar in his ‘mode’ and the traditional spelling of English. [AppE]…”
