Time flow is a concept well kept at Quenya101 where you can learn to observe the Imladris Reckoning, learn from your elvish horoscope (or not that much) and even follow the 1 age in 1 year alternate chronology.

Enough with the talk and let’s head to matters here! Tengwar Kanji for the elvish year:

Elvish Horoscope!

Let me make myself clear: I don’t believe in horoscopes nor support any astrology related material! This is just a post about, you know…elvish fun mixed with something else which most people didn’t see it coming.

Instead of following some ludicrous pseudo-science developed by the Babylonians thousands of years ago, when they observed that the seasons and some events related to them repeated each year at the same appointed time and coincidentally the stars always were at the same position when that happened and…..BANG, someone had the “brilliant” idea of connecting the dots (literally) and believing that stars guided everything that happened in Earth, included the birth, personality and future of people. In conclusion: bullshit!

I’m pretty glad Elves are not that stupid. They knew for a certainty that the stars were mere gifts of Varda and they praised them, but you know…the future is yours to take and to make and the personality is yours to mold or let it be molded by others.

To mock how a horoscope would be in an elvish style, check the chart below:

How do I know my Elvish sign?

First of all, you need to know which day you were born according to the elvish calendar. Go here and get your Java Elvish Calendar so you can convert your birth date into the Imladris Reckoning.

Pay attention to one important detail: Were you born AFTER the sunset? If so, check the “after sunset” box at the Java Elvish Calendar, click to convert it and what you get is your day and also the day of the week you were born!

Voilà. The day of the week is what determines which elvish sign is yours!

Mine is Menelya. What about you? Know a little bit more about yourself and the day you were born below:

-

Valanya

Valanya (“Valaday”) is the day of the Valar, the Powers. People born in Valanya are intense, powerful, impulsive, organized and determined. Sometimes, they tend to be jealous, self-centered and stubborn.

Beware of: angry dogs, falling objects and people who pretend to be your friends but are not. Eventually, you’re gonna die.

-

Elenya

Elenya (“Starday”) is the day of the Stars, the jewels Varda put in the sky. People born in Elenya are efficient, sensitive, creative, compassionate and loyal. Unfortunately, they may be a little bit obsessive, elusive and too dreamy.

Beware of: drunk drivers, lava from volcanos and people who want to put you down by diminishing your creativity. Sadly, in the end, you’re gonna die.

-

Anarya

Anarya (“Sunday”) is the day of the Sun, the great fruit of Laurelin who heralded the coming of the Men. People born in Anarya are bright, realistic, curious, knowledgeable and versatile. Also, they may be considered as rebellious, unsociable and moody.

Beware of: food that might make you choke, hitchhikers and people who gossip about you and what you do with life. Anyway, they’ll shut up when you die, and you will.

-

Isilya

Isilya (“Moonday”) is the day of the Moon, Telperion’s last flower. People born in Isilya are romantic, harmonious, fair, enthusiastic and protective. Their bad traits include being envious, nervous and wrathful.

Beware of: UFOs, mosquitoes that transmit Malaria and people who play with other’s feelings without showing any regret. But don’t forget that….you’re gonna die!

-

Aldúya

Aldúya (TwoTreeday) is the day dedicated to the Two Trees, the wondrous Trees of Valinor. People born in Aldúya are brave, civilized, smart, sociable and reliable. Perhaps, they may also be temperamental, tactless and deeply complex.

Beware of: boiling water on your lap, serial killers with chainsaw and people who are not honest and lie all the time. Lies won’t last forever and neither will you….You’re gonna die.

-

Menelya

Menelya (“Heavenday, Skyday”) is the day dedicated to the Skies and everything above. People born in Menelya are intellectual, devoted, magnetic, original and idealistic. Unfortunately, they are lazy, introvert and depressive also.

Beware of: politics, lightning bolts and people who want to abuse you and your efforts. Remember: don’t try too hard because…you’re gonna die!

Horoscopes, huh? Full of predictive material with lots of human traits that one way or the other you’ll identify yourself with it.

Now you can play and joke with it elvish style!  :D

Elvish Calendar now easier than ever!

OK, let’s get the facts straight: you came to Quenya101 Language Institute to learn more about Elvish culture. You saw a link up there labeled “Calendar“; clicked and  started reading: so far so good! You read about yéni, loar, months, special days, and thought: “Damn, how cool! Tolkien was a genius!”. And he was indeed. Then came the week days, leap years and numerals: a bit harder, but nothing to worry about. And THEN came Anno Domini Synchronization: maybe you understood it, maybe not, but in any case wondering: “how the hell am I gonna use this?”.

Well, to save you (part of) the hard work, I proudly present you this child of mine: NOTIË IMBERISSËO, or “Reckoning of Imladris” in the language of men.

Characteristics

Basically, its a desktop application that gives you:

  • the current date according to the Elvish calendar
  • the ability to see the date in any other Timezone of Arda
  • a converter for any date you want to and from that Reckoning

The application is multi-language, currently available in Spanish, English, Deutsch and, of course, Quenya; Português is on the way and the Tengwar version of the Quenya translation is almost ready.

Usage

I guess its pretty straightforward to use. It does not need any installation or configuration: just download and run! What you should do is set your city and country in the Settings tab. Why? Because the app uses them and your timezone to calculate today’s sunset, using an Internet connection (as you should know, an Elvish day starts when the Sun sets).

To be aware of

First of all, its completely free, and you will NEVER get charged for it. But of course, as you can imagine, I couldn’t dedicate the amount of time I would’ve wanted (I sleep, study and work for a living, you know). What does this mean? Nothing bad; its just that you may find some small bugs in the application. NOT in the date conversion, ‘cos it was thoroughly tested with Erunno; but maybe in the interface, or some functionality.

Furthermore, I’m no User Interface (UI) or User Experience (UX) designer: I’m just a programmer wanna-be-engineer doing its best to help people and spread Tolkien’s work. Therefore, I’m sure its not the best interface you have seen on a software, but its functional and works.

ToDo list

Here are some improvements I intend to add in the (short) future:

  • Tengwar version
  • Português
  • Mobile version (Android first)
  • Revamped User Interface

License & sharing

As I said, this app is 100% free; and I release this app under the GNU General Public License v3. And what the hell is that? Well, to sum up, you are legally encouraged to use, distribute and/or modify this software, while asserting copyright over it. For that reason, I uploaded ALL the source code to a repository on GitHub: https://github.com/joaquingatica/Notie-Imberisseo.

Likewise every piece of content in Quenya101, we charge no fee, but nevertheless demand some credit for it. So please, add some if you’re honest enough.

Feedback

Well, about this: please give me feedback! Specially about errors, corrections and improvements to the application. If you’re an advanced user, you can also fork the repo on GitHub, and  help me on its development.

But, the easiest thing, use the comments below to praise, criticise or ask questions about the software. I’ll make my best to answer ANY kind of question that arises.

Download

Great, I love all you said, but gimme that app! Well, here it is:

Download here

Specifications

This piece of software is written in Java programming language, and its 100% multi-platform (a.k.a: the same file runs smoothly in GNU/Linux, Windows & Mac). You only need to have Java installed (and most people do). I deliver it in the form of an executable JAR, so its just a matter of double-click to run.*

* Linux users (as myself) will know that, as the file is downloaded from the Internet, it must be set as executable. It’s done by running the following command in the terminal:

chmod +x <filename>.jar

For programmers only

If you’re a programmer, and wish to use some of this code/libraries, you can get everything from the aforementioned repository.

I also developed a class called ImladrisCalendar.java, that emulates GregorianCalendar.java, but for the Reckoning of Imladris (of course!). Its the one I used to do the conversions. You can see it here: https://github.com/joaquingatica/Imladris-Calendar. If you prefer, you can get the JAR library directly from this link.

Conclusion

I’d like to thank my friend Gonzalo for the translation to Deutsch; Ondo for the upcoming Português one; and Erunno for the help in testing, and the great article/page  he wrote about the Elvish Calendar.

I really, really hope you like the app. But above all I hope its useful, and that you show it to as many people you can. Stay tuned for updates, ‘cos they’ll be coming, and you wont wanna miss them!

And now, there’s no excuse to keep using Gregorian Calendar:

Elves of the world unite! Lets all switch back to Notië Imberissëo!

Time to wrap up the 1 Age in 1 Year project which ends today with the banishment of Morgoth and the end of the 1st Age of the Sun. What a good ride we had together. Beleriand is such a place to visit, huh?

Some things are ended, but others are begun, brand new stuff! Here I’ll give the Imladris Reckoning Calendar for the Year XIV 140 which starts exactly at 7:18 PM ET tomorrow; March, 27th, 2012. (Check your region and local time to see when the sun sets where you live)

Are you a Tolkien fan, a Tolkien reader or a Tolkien…who?

So…here’s a simple test. It’s not a scientific test, (don’t take it seriously) lil’ elves…but it might bring forth some interesting results depending on each one’s case.

The question is:

Are you…

  • a Tolkien fan (you definitely know what you’re tolkien about)
  • a Tolkien reader (maybe you read the book once or twice) or
  • a Tolkien…who? (Who’s Tolkien, anyway?)

Are you ready????

GO!

I – You’re interested in learning the strange words coming out of the mouth of that beautiful elf. What do you say?

  1. “I wanna learn Elvish”
  2. “I wanna learn Tengwar”
  3. “I wanna learn Quenya and/or Sindarin”

II – Today is September,22nd! What are you celebrating today?

  1. “Bilbo and Frodo’s Birthday, OF COURSE!”
  2. “I’m celebrating Cormarë!”
  3. “I’m not celebrating any hobbit birthday because according to the Shire Reckoning, there’s nothing special today!”

III – You love the poem Namárië! When you wanna share your love, how do you copy it?

  1. “I press CTRL+C and then after CTRL+V”
  2. “Ai! Laurie lantar lassi surinen, yeni unotime ve ramar aldaron!…”
  3. “Ai! Laurië lantar lassi súrinen, yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!…”

IV – How did you feel after you had the first contact with ‘The Silmarillion’?

  1. “I don’t remember this part in the movies”
  2. “Headache. Too difficult to understand”
  3. “I cried aloud: Goddamn, MORGOTH, You Bastard!”

V – Who is Sauron?

  1. “An evil dinosaur who lived in a land where one cannot simply walk into”
  2. “The Dark Lord, The Evil in Middle-Earth, The Lord of the Rings”
  3. “A mere lieutenant of the greatest real Dark Lord Morgoth.”

Now add the number of each answer you gave and check your score!

Score chart:

5-9 = You’re a Tolkien…who?

10-13 = You’re a Tolkien reader

14-15 = You are a Tolkien FAN!
