Due to my strong link with Brazil I needed to post this! I got friends there, I have visited the places several times, my girl is from there (she’s in Belo Horizonte now), etc… I’d like to share it, contribute with my Quenya and dedicate it to the Brazilian riots happening in there now.

We have already occupied Mordor here, and even though I’m not that political riot person, I have an empathy with the people there! It’s a valid situation. Things suck and they are fed up with it. I don’t know exactly where the process gonna lead them, but if you’re not happy DO something! Make your voice heard and change what needs to be changed!

Today, I recommend all of you who are not aware what’s going on in Brazil, to read the news, to spread the cause, to share it! Bad governments are there simply to be disposed of! Egypt had its time, Libya did too recently, Argentina in the 2000′s, now wakie wakie Brazil!

And don’t forget, don’t get mislead….

Curso de Quenya em português!

Boa noite! Este post é dedicado à nossos amigos falantes de português! Hoje, mostrarei a continuação de um projeto muito antigo que acabei abandonando por um bom tempo, mas que finalmente emerge das profundezas do meu computador! Há pouco tempo atrás, um amigo me perguntou se eu podia preparar algo básico para dar uma aula introdutória básica de Quenya para os membros da Toca São Paulo, parte integrante do Conselho Branco Sociedade Tolkien. Lembrei que, lá pra 2011, eu tinha começado um material básico exatamente pra isso. Resolvi aperfeiçoa-lo e divulgá-lo aqui (e para os membros da Toca-SP), na forma de uma apostila introdutória que pretendo estender conforme possível. Um dos maiores problemas que os falantes de português enfrentam ao tentar aprender Quenya é a falta de material. Existe apenas um curso disponível em português, o Curso de Quenya do Helge Kåre Fauskanger.

Mesmo sendo um material ótimo e altamente recomendado para os que se interessam pelo assunto, ele não é tão simples para um primeiro contato com o Quenya, pois trata de forma muito profunda e completa todos os temas apresentados. Escrevi esta apostila como uma alternativa inicial ao curso do Helge, introduzindo, de forma simples, o leitor a essa língua maravilhosa. O que disponibilizo hoje é apenas um rascunho e um início, abordando apenas a escrita, a pronúncia, o vocabulário e substantivos. Há alguns exercícios simples, com gabarito no fim da apostila, de maneira a reforçar conceitos apresentados. Com o tempo, espero aumentar os temas abordados, sempre disponibilizando aqui no Quenya101. Este material não é perfeito, podem haver falhas, tanto conceituais quanto de escrita. Por favor, me contatem sempre que encontrarem algo que não está bom e, também, com feedback, pedidos de temas que gostariam de ver abordados, sugestões, criticas e tudo o mais. Eärendil finds his harbour

He did it! Eärendil did it! This is the last part of ‘Eärendil series’ where we sailed around Google Translator listening to several languages pronunciation of this single Quenya word Eärendil and comparing it to Quenya phonetics. Which one is the closest of all? Follow this ride and find what Eärendil has found! Surprised or not, you’ll be aided to keep in mind the correct Quenya pronunciation!

Portuguese

Portuguese shares many phonemes with Spanish and that contributed for a high rate here. We got EÄRENDI here, so almost on the spot!

Norwegian

Oh yeah, baby! Norwegian got a solid pronunciation like Hungarian did. The first E is too open, but we got ÄRENDIL pretty good.

Korean

Well, as long as Far-East is concerned, Korean is good! It has firm vowels and some consonants stand up for the task. We got a ÄREND in Korea!

Slovak

That’s another language I know nothing about and have never heard before. I can’t say more about its phonetics but in this exercise, we have a RENDI here.

Greek

4 stars? Really? YES! Greek kicks ass! Quenya was based on Greek after all. But there’s a trick because of the alphabet. You gotta type Εαρεντιλ (Earentil) so you can hear EÄRENDIL. See? Whole word!!! Unfortunately, the stress is not correct, otherwise it’d be a 5-star!

Finnish

Obviously, Eärendil finishes his tour in the land of the Finns! Finnish got it all! Pronunciation, stress. This is IT! It IS Quenya pronunciation of

EÄRENDIL!

Eärendil comes and sails away

Eärendil doesn’t stop! Now it’s time to visit another places, check another languages. Resuming from our previous post, let’s listen different native people speaking their languages (through the use of Google Translator tool) and compare how close that pronunciation is to actual Quenya. Don’t forget: The word we take for our ride is Eärendil!

Italian

No big surprise as Italian is a Latin based language like Quenya is. We got a good pronunciation of RENDIL here.

German

German has a solid Quenya-like vowels resemblance, but the advantage stops there. Consonants are another matter. We got a good ENDIL here.

Dutch

Dutch sounds like German (ok, that’s a superficial view) and for Quenya phonetics, Dutch behaves the same way as German too. There’s an ENDIL there and nothing more.

Russian

No, no. Russian is just not meant for Quenya. They wouldn’t get along. I heard a good REN even though the stress is absolutely different.

Hungarian

Fantastic surprise! Hungarian nailed 99% of the word! It’s ÄRENDIL straight up man! A pity the initial E is too open for Quenya standards.

Spanish

Spanish deserves a 5-star rate! Its phonetics is excellent for Quenya! Unfortunately, there’s a lil’ slip with the ERENDIL we hear there. Perhaps some regional variant wouldn’t miss the ä.

Eärendil around the World

Shall we have an interesting exercise? It’s easy, quick and a pretty interesting tool for the ones who crave to listen to Quenya!

As it’s known, there is no online Quenya translator (that I am aware of, at least). Quenya is an artificial limited language and that poses double extra toughness for one to create such resource. I’m very happy about that as there are too many people pretending to know something about “elvish” with an online translator….I think you can picture the hell it would be.

But I digressed. I mentioned online translators here due to the resourcefulness of the ones available right now. Google Translator, the most famous, I guess; gives you the opportunity to listen many languages spoken by native people. That’s an A+!

Now, here’s the trick: Which pronunciation would be closer to Quenya? For advanced students, that’s quite easy to answer, but let’s ride together and rate each language based on their phonetics. The word to be used as example is: Eärendil. The number of stars stand for how close that particular pronunciation resembles Quenya itself.

English

Awful! Nothing to do with Quenya. The only letter that sounds like Quenya is the D in Eärendil. Basically, English teaches you how NOT to pronounce Quenya!

French

Ouch! French may sound fancy but not for Quenya. We got only the DI in Eärendil sounding decently, the rest, oh no!

Czech

Surprise, surprise! I know nothing about Czech but the sound is quite good for Quenya. We got the RENDI nailed in Eärendil.

Turkish

Well, I have already heard a bit of Turkish and it definitely doesn’t sound like Quenya. Some phonemes are close though and here we got REN in Eärendil.

Danish

Uh-uh, not Danish! Again, there’s only the D in Eärendil, nothing more.

Swedish

Almost Swedish! Well, ALL phonemes are there, but the stress is not good. It falls in the last syllable and that’s weird (i.e. wrong) in Quenya!

When an elf reads an elvish tattoo

This is an eye opener. It’s not about elvish tattoos per se. You can check good(?) examples here. This post is about the nauseating feeling one who understands and reads Tengwar, gets when one lays eyes upon the misspelled misfortunes of others’ skins.

Sometimes people don’t get it. They think it’s quite ok getting Tengwar gibberish. “It doesn’t matter” they say. “The letters are beautiful and nobody’s gonna read them anyway” they say. But they are

WЯONG

It matters! There are people who’s gonna read them! Now you’re gonna read the tattoos below and understand how it feels when you can read awful elvish tattoos. BEHOLD:

How does it feel? Would you facepalm them or compliment their beautiful letters? That’s how we (the ones who know Quenya and/or Sindarin) feel when we see tattoos that don’t make sense. I mean, they tried and they felt short. They may look cool and awsome, but they’re not. And the moral of the story is: LEARN how to WRITE first, then get a TATTOO! Be it English, be it Japanese, be it Quenya! It’s golden rule for them all!
