Not all those who wander are lost 4

He did it TOO!

Fernando Tadeu Ginez Fabretti

Fernando Tadeu Ginez Fabretti

For the 4th time, I come here before ye all, to praise a Tolkiendil who permanently and most poetically had that immortal saying marked on his skin. Fernando from Brazil (holy shit! His hometown is my girl’s!!!!) has become part of the club, the exclusive Quenya101 club. From now on he shall be known here as The One Who Wanders In Brazil. Alongside The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The ForceThe One With The BirdiesThe One With The TimeThe One With Things To Be SeenThe One With Ainulindalë & The One Who Loves Her Sister. Behold his ink:

Not all those who wander are lost Fernando

Queni ya ranya ullumë vanwë umir

A cool guy from a cool place and with lots of things in common. While checking some photos of his, I realized the guy plays Flag Football! Amazing! I never thought there was such an organized Flag in Brazil!

I don’t know why, when, how is he playing it, he never talked to me before about it. It looks like he’s a cornerback from most of the pics I saw. I’d love if he could tell here about that (I’m really curious). Also….I’m dying to know if there’s any chance he knows my girlfriend? She lives where he lives! Great coincidence! Anyway….

Super Bowl XLVII (elvishly speaking as usual)

SBXLVII elvish

Oh sweet Sunday I had! My life has changed recently (for the worst), I moved to another city and it seems it’s NOT temporary as expected due to my work; but this Sunday was a carefree Sunday! Super Bowl Sunday!

Forgive me the non-sports people, but Super Bowl is special as it is!

Me and some buddies (Robert & Edward) watched together the game and it was pretty fun as I beat both of their bets on the 49ers! I knew Ravens would win and Ray Lewis would get a most nfl_g_raylew93_cr_400deserved last game before his retirement.

Memorable game (power outage played its part for better or for worse) I just didn’t like the fact Jacoby Jones wasn’t elected MVP. A hell of a 108-yd return for TD and an amazing catch and dance in front of two defenders for TD.

Well, as for the 49ers….Colin Kaepernick is good but I knew he was too green for such a feat as SB!

If you’re knew here and haven’t met any Football post before, you must be very confused right now wondering what Tolkien and Quenya got to do with it anyway! Don’t be downhearted!

Here’s a lesson for everyone! Some colors in Quenya:

Are you up to this task? Can you name all the colors here? There’s one trick tough! One of them is NOT a color and another one is a composition derived from a noun. Well, well, well…the first one to gimme the correct answers to this “colorful” exercise, gets a FAST LINE prize! Let’s have a game, shall we?

Congrats for the future winner and…

Kudos for

With great relief, after a long wait, Football season is back! As last year, I invite the ones who enjoy the sport as I do, to join the Tolkienites Fantasy Football League! Ok, ok, I know…most people from other countries don’t enjoy Football as much as they should (if only they watched and played the game, they’d know what it feels like) but this is the chance of mixing up two different worlds (Football + Tolkien), learn a bit with it and have fun in the process.

Here is the 2011 season almanac and how it went:

The 4 Divisions (North Arnor, East Beleriand, West Beleriand and South Gondor) totaling 12 teams (This may vary this year. More or less teams are allowed)

If more people pop up to join, hooray…more spots will be created! No problem with that!

Famous people who like Tolkien

We are all anonymous. I mean..,we’re not famous, we’re not artists, celebrities on TV. We’re all  everyday regular boys and girls, right? If you’re reading this, then we got one BIG thing in common: Tolkien. Well, how about get to know famous people who share the same passion? Interesting, huh? Read below this article found on the spectacular site of Tolkien Library and get to know them:

We have a small planet and on it live an incredible amount of people. Many do share a strong love for the books of Tolkien and even more so have a deep love for The Lord of the Rings movies. Many celebrities do love books or movies and while most of the time we don’t know for sure, there are many famous Tolkien fans out there. Here is a list of famous Tolkien fans and celebrities who like The Lord of the Rings. if you know any others, please feel free to send over the info and we can add them to the list. Probably with The Hobbit movies coming there will be many more that will come out and tell us all about their passion!

Queen Margrethe II, is the queen regnant of Denmark. She is also an artist, whose works have been inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s literature from a very young age. Her works of art are examined in the film documentary J.R.R.T. : A Film Portrait Of J.R.R. Tolkien.

In the eary 1970s, the Queen was inspired to illustrate The Lord of the Rings. She sent her illustrations to Tolkien, who was struck by the similarity to the style of his own drawings. In 1977, Queen Margrethe’s drawings were published in the Danish translation of the book (Ringenes Herre, edition by publishers Gyldendal; one illustration for each chapter), redrawn by the British artist Eric Fraser.

Under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer her illustrations were also featured in a British edition of The Lord of the Rings, published by HarperCollins and The Folio Society. Queen Margrethe gave permission to use her illustrations in the CD layouts for the musical interpretation of the poems and songs from The Lord of the Rings by the Danish music group The Tolkien Ensemble.

Stephen Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, is an American comedian, satirist, actor, and writer known for his ironic style, particularly in his portrayal of uninformed opinion leaders and deadpan comedic delivery.

Stephen Colbert developed a love of science fiction and fantasy novels, especially the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, of which he remains an avid fan. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings story will often show through in the Report. However, Colbert tries to limit references to The Lord of the Ringsbecause he says, as a fan, he does not want to “debase” Tolkien’s work by having his character like it. One thing is certain he loves to show his amazing The Lord of the Ringscollectables.

James Franco is an American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, author, painter, performance artist and professor at New York University.

During James Franco’s appearance on The Colbert Report he managed to get into an intense argument with Stephen Colbert over who had been the bigger fan of The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien growing up.

Film actor Christoper Lee is next to Saruman in The Lord of the Rings movies also a huge fan of Tolkien.

He has a huge respect for the author Tolkien as you can read in the following quote:

“What Professor Tolkien achieved is unique in the literature of my lifetime. Indeed, in my opinion, he had reached the peak of literary invention of all time. Nothing like it has ever existed, and probably never will.”

Christopher Lee had met Tolkien once (making him the only person in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy to have done so) and makes a habit of reading the novels at least once a year.

Next to this Christopher Lee became an active participant, both as narrator and singer, at the album and concerts ofThe Tolkien Ensemble. Of all famous people Christopher Lee is probably the biggest Tolkien fan of all!

Megan Fox has admitted to being a huge fan of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and regularly uses internet forums dedicated to the films. According to PopEater, the 24-year-old star displayed an extensive knowledge of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary classics and revealed that she is frustrated by fans that criticize Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning adaptations.

She said: “[Fans] complain that Frodo is eating the Lembas bread outside of Mordor instead of the in the Mines of Moria. And they get really mad. You cannot focus completely on pleasing them because you’ll never win. They’ll never be happy no matter what you do.”

Another person who for sure loved The Lord of the Rings but will probably not claim it with too many words is James Cameron. In Empire magazine we could read about his favorite scene in the movie:

“I think the scene that blew me away and was probably a causal link to Avatar getting made, at least in the short term, was the scene where Gollum debates with himself what he should do. His schizophrenic fugue state was so beautifully realised, not only as a concept for a scene, but in terms of the execution and the fact that it was such a milestone in performance-capture CG. I was blown away by that scene and when there was talk about Andy Serkis getting an Oscar nomination for that role, I thought it was completely valid. It’s a great performance.”

During some interviews at several cons we learned that is was this exaxt scene that pushed James Cameron to work further on Avatar. He has also stated that with Avatar he wanted to compete with Star Wars and Tolkien. While we know James Cameron has an enormous respect for Peter Jackson, we can probably add him to the list of Tolkien fans, while he will probably never say this himself. One thing is certain he sees the current work on The Hobbit movies as an extra push to work harder and take our cinema experience to the next level!

In sports we can find several The Lord of the Rings fans, like for example Ruud van Nistlerooy.

Of course football players are never interviewed about their passion for Tolkien and so we have to learn it from other sources.

On fourfourtwo Dominic Monaghan says

“I’ve become a good friend of Ruud van Nistlerooy, too, who was a big fan of Lord of the Rings, and when Elijah and me turned up at United’s U.S. tour last year, he asked to meet up with us and we went with the players to a party at Venice Beach. I’ve kept in touch with Ruud since then and we exchange e-mails from time to time, so it doesn’t feel like I’m so far away.”

Dominic Monaghan even owns a Manchester United shirt with “Hobbit” printed on the back, which was presented to him by former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Probably the best known Tolkien fan in footbal is Fernando Torres. On his left arm he has “Fernando” tattooed in tengwar, which is a constructed script invented by J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings.

He is not the only soccer player with an Elvish tattoe like this, for example Argentinian Sergio Agüero has his nickname Kun Agüero written in Elvish on his right arm.

Isaac Asimov was a prolific science fiction author and polemic. As such, some of his writings discuss J.R.R. Tolkien’s thematics, especially the One Ring.

In a letter written to Charlotte and Denis Plimmer in 1967, Tolkien said that he seldom found any modern books that could hold his attention. One exception though was the science fiction of Isaac Asimov, which Tolkien said he enjoyed.

In an interview conducted in 1988, Asimov said that he “likes” Tolkien and that he has “read it five times” (likely referring to The Lord of the Rings).

The Beatles were Tolkien fans, and in the 1960s, they wanted to make their own adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

As strange as it sounds, John Lennon was once pushing for a Beatles version of “Lord of the Rings.” McCartney said, “John wanted us to buy the film rights to Lord of the Rings. It was very much his idea.” The Beatles version would have had John Lennon playing the grasping, thieving creature Gollum, Paul McCartney as the hero Frodo, George Harrison as the wise wizard Gandalf and Ringo Starr playing Frodo’s devoted sidekick Sam. The Beatles plan fell flat when the author J.R.R. Tolkien, who still had the film rights, rejected the idea of the Beatles doing it.

Led Zeppelin is well known for their Tolkien inspired lyrics. It can also be noted that one of Robert Plant’s dogs was named Strider.

Robert Plant was so much influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien’s books that it inspired lyrics in some early Led Zeppelin songs, most notably “The Battle of Evermore”, “Misty Mountain Hop”, “No Quarter”, “Ramble On” and “Over the Hills and Far Away” contain verses referencing Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

There are always discussions whether Robert Plant did really read a lot of Tolkien but I know some other people who named their dogs or even children after characters from Tolkien’s books and they all share one common thing: a love for Tolkien.

Long long list! There are more!!!! Check the Tolkien Libraryand see for yourself! Maybe one day, who knows…you get famous and be part of this list, huh? 😀

Super Bowl XLVI (elvishly speaking)

Yesterday! What a day! Super Bowl Sunday is always A day. I’m sorry if you’re not into sports, but this gotta be posted here (with that nice little elvish touch of Quenya101).

I was kinda sad that my team (Packers) didn’t make it to the Super Bowl even though they won 15 out of 16 games during the season. And what bugged me more, was the fact the once again (just like 2007) it was the Giants who had defeated them in the playoffs.

But as the Patriots were there…you know….Go Giants Go! And they won! Against all odds (not in my opinion), they beat Mr. Bündchen and their “so perfect offense”.

Ok. If you don’t like Football, you may be thinking right now: “WTFFF? I thought I was in a Quenya site, not a NFL one!” Don’t despair, my elvish friend! You well know how I twist topics into a way to make them BANG…….united as one! (Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…but devil is in the details, right?)

Enough of the rambling! Let’s learn Quenya! Take a look below at the amazing New York Giants Ass Touchdown and get to know Body Parts! (with a couple of football equipment as a bonus).

Now here’s the trick! The names are written in Tengwar! Can you write them down using Roman alphabet? Consider it as an exercise to train your reading skills! If you can, leave a reply here and let’s see if you got them right!!!

for the ones really interested in Football like me, let’s remember and rejoice with the scene above in motion…(unless you are a Patriots fan…..desolé)

Kudos for

Football + Valar = ?

Inevitable! Today is Sunday, I mean Gameday (as there’s Beerday, there’s Gameday) and here it is a mash-up of 2 of my passions: Tolkien & NFL.

So, what if the Valar rooted for NFL teams? That’s crazy, I know…but don’t blame me! NFL fans are all like that! 😀

OBS: Tolkien lore and NFL wits may be needed to understand the comments below. You know, jokes are never bad…sometimes they’re just TOO internal, coming out from your tackled pancreas or burst spleen….it happens!

Ma nalyë manwa Talcornen?

(Are you ready for some Football?)

Philadelphia Eagles? The Eagles are Manwë's!!! Philadelphia should be paying royalties for Manwë!

Ok, Varda is not a cowgirl, but that lonely star from Dallas...what else than Varda's, the Queen of Stars?

Pittsburgh & all metallurgy owe their jobs to Aulë, Father of Dwarves (Yes, Polamalu, I'm talking to your hair!).

Green is in the name, in the jersey, in the logo...that's definitely Yavanna's team! (and mine also).

Sorry, Ulmo. I know they're bad now but Miami is the only "aquatic" team. You gotta stick with it! Think about Marino!

Oromë ridding his steed Nahar couldn't approve more the broncos of Denver team!

Tulkas came as fast as lightning to fight for Arda and charge the Valar's battery! Go Tulkas Go!

Ok, I don't like New England either, but who can deny they were the Dream Team of the 00's? Lórien's dream.

Baltimore, the city once dead for Football (1984-1996) has Mandos as his patron & the raven as his good ill omen pet!

Cry me a river, Nienna! Minnesota sucks and they'll go nowhere without a DECENT QB this year! FAVRE!!!!

The most perfect one! If you know Oakland and the crowd from there, you know this is from Melkor's!

Spanish Soccer + Tolkien = ?

= Tatuaje! Por supuesto…tattoo!

Recently, it had come to my attention a couple of famous people who has got Tengwar tattoos. Wow..pretty cool! Coincidentally both of them were former Atlético de Madrid players (soccer team from Spain).  They are the

Sergio Agüero

Argentinian Sergio Agüero & Spanish Fernando Torres. Pretty curious,

huh? Are they really Tolkien fans like you and me or just got some exotic alphabet tattoo? Is there a Tolkien book club at Atlético de Madrid or what? So many questions…

Unfortunately…I can answer none! I know it’s disappointing, but I

Fernando Torres

just can’t. I’m very curious indeed to hear from them what is the story behind the tattoos, but although I have researched a bit, I could find nothing concrete.

Anyway…what I can answer and will here is: Are the tattoos correct?

First things first: They speak Spanish and I assumed what is written on their arms is Tengwar Spanish Mode. I’m not expert on Spanish Mode but after remembering it through research (si tu eres Español o Latino, puedes aprender el modo de escritura Tengwar para el castellano aquí) could find interesting details out.

Sergio Agüero

In his arm it’s written: Kun Agüero (his nickname) and it’s written correctly according to Spanish Mode. Very good indeed! Kudos for him!

Fernando Torres

In his arm is written: Fernando. Unfortunately…it seems like he mixed up Tengwar Modes! The tengwar themselves are in Spanish Mode, but I couldn’t find any Spanish mode (be it written with tehtar or vocales plenas, or even by ortografía tradicional o de acuerdo con la pronunciación) that used the tehtar the way he did here. They are above the next tengwa. Let me give you an example:

Fernando (according to Spanish Mode) /// Frennado (his tattoo)

See how weird? Ok,’s a minor detail, but it makes difference. I couldn’t understand why he did it. English Mode follow this kind of rules to tehtar (coming at the next tengwa) but there’s no reason for that in Spanish. Actually it’s written something like: Frennad (an the flying ‘o’ tehta almost without support at the end)

That was it! A quick and simple check on the tattoos of these players! But…can you help me out here answering the other questions: Why did he do it? Are they really core fans or what? Damn, I’m curious to hear from them!

Endor & Valariandëo Omentië

I’d like to invite all fans of Football & Tolkien to join our Fantasy Football League. And I mean Football, not soccer. (sorry Europeans).

Its name is Tolkienites and by clicking on the link here you can check the league home page on the site of NFL. Currently, there are 8 players already and 8 slots available for new players who would like to join. There will be 4 divisions, each one with a peculiar name like: North Arnor, East Beleriand, West Beleriand & South Gondor. Some of the teams are: Moriquendi, I Ahtartyaror, Smaug Dragons and so on. If you feel like joining, it’s recommended to create a name for your team based in Tolkien, but feel free to be creative and name it as you wish, even if it’s not Tolkien related.

If you lack some knowledge of what is Fantasy Football and how people play it, don’t despair! Click here!

Of course, if you join our league, you’re gonna have all need you help to understand the mechanics of the game and how you can play it nicely! It’s not hard, it’s pretty much fun! I’ve been playing for 4 years straight now and although I’m a rookie (compared to more experienced players) I’ve been doing quite well! Last year, it was my best result: 4th place. Well…not that good, but I have never lost my division yet!! Last “trophy”:

Moriquendi - East Division Champs 2008-10

So…why don’t you give a try?

Important  Draft is in 09/03/11 @ 9PM ET and the password to join the league is: quenya4u.

That's how we play in the Shire!
