7th Year +

CELEBRATION TIME!

Quenya101 starts its 7th year of life!

It began in a February, 3rd…just like this one here, but it was in a different world, in a different life, many things are left behind there and they are never coming back.

It began with a Welcome! post with no pretension at all. Actually, I had no idea what to do, what to write, how I would build this place wherein I would deposit everything that I love about this language.

It began with my words. My keyboard and words. Love was the fuel and in time, things started to grow, to develop, like an embryo.

One section here, another page there, let’s help people with this, now with that…and here I am, years later with millions of faithful elves joining the multitude of devoted Tolkien fans.

Now, Quenya101 has 61 special dates converted into the elvish calendar, 471 famous quotes translated, 524 posts published, 556 names etymologically composed, 4,084 words translated into Quenya, 8,892 comments and thousands (I really can say that) thousands of hours of my FREE time dedicated to Quenya101 Language Institute site.

But…

Why?

Because of YOU!

I’m here because of you. You are the ones who want it. You are the ones like myself who urge to learn, to understand, to have that written, pronounced, translated and explained in Quenya.

You want it, you got it!

Forgive me if I cannot deliver the amount you want and deserve. Millions of you are too many for one of me.

But I am here and I’m gonna try my best. Be sure of that.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for being there at the other side of the screen.

Year 6 brought some many new things! We were back with regular posts (some months almost in a daily basis…something never saw here), the creation of our OWN exclusive Tengwar Fonts as well as a new Tengwar Font Guide compiling the best there is currently. A SHOP was opened! New services directed to tattoo fans who wish to get theirs. A new full-time project to follow the Ainulindalë Quenyanna legacy now covering Eärendillinwë (thanks to Jonathan Britton)…

Wow, man….if you only knew what is coming this 7th year! But I cannot spoil the surprises. You’ll have to sit down and enjoy at the right time what’s in store for you. Stay tuned here where you know you get everything in Quenya…

The One that has it all & The One that praises the Lord

Aiya! It’s me again and I’m here to talk about some friends and their amazing tattoos. As you could guess from the post title, I’m talking about two people. I promise that my double posts will end soon!

First, let me talk about Judith ‘Mithrellas’ Arantes. She’s a good friend of mine and, a while ago, she asked me to translate Psalm 150 into Quenya:

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord

We worked together to find some the perfect translation, with two different translations, finally going for the following:

Á lávë ilyë súliva eälar laitar i Héru

Literally, this means Let every spirit-possessing being praise the Lord. One interesting thing I found while working this translation is the intimate relation between breath and spirit in Quenya. Quoting the Quettaparma:

BREATH (noun) hwesta (breeze, puff of air), foa (puff of breath), súlë (Þ) (spirit) (earlier [MET] form thúlë = Þúlë)

As usual, check out the Tengwar version:

Á lávë ilyë súliva eälar laitar i Héru

But this was not a simple tattoo! It has a full work of art into it! Check it out, together with a photo of Mithy cosplaying as Tauriel:

Now let’s go for the second part of the post.

I promised in my last post that you would hear more of Franz ‘Maglor’ Brehme. Well, Maglor not only tattooed the famous Not all those who wander are lost verse, but MANY other nerd culture references! Batman, Star Wars, Wheel of Time, Tolkien: you name it, he has it somewhere on his body! And Maglor is also a tattoo artist, so you can guess how tattoos are special to him.

So, let’s finish with some photos of him. Don’t get scared by the “bad boy” looks, he’s a very nice person!

That’s all for today, folks!

The Greatest Elvish Tattoo Collection EVER

One year ago, we had the Ultimate Elvish Tattoo Collection which was a big hit and many many people came into contact with the truth about elvish tattoos and the major mistakes involving them (invisible to the lay eye). Now it’s time to update this Quenya101 collection, but let’s forget about the bad examples for a while and focus on the nice stuff, the well done tattoos, the ones who deserve our praise not only because they look cool on the skin but because they respected what Tolkien left to us.

Below you’ll have the finest examples one can get. It may not be news for most of Quenya101 followers, but as new people are always joining our ranks, it’s cool to have them all in one spot. So, BEHOLD…the greatest elvish tattoo collection ever:

I’d like to thank every single one who shared with us their tattoos ( The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The ForceThe One With The BirdiesThe One With The TimeThe One With Things To Be SeenThe One With AinulindalëThe One Who Loves Her Sister & The One Who Wanders In Brazil ).

This post will always be updated whenever new jewels join the club. Stay tuned and never forget the golden rule:

Do NOT tattoo something you cannot read!

When an elf reads an elvish tattoo

This is an eye opener. It’s not about elvish tattoos per se. You can check good(?) examples here. This post is about the nauseating feeling one who understands and reads Tengwar, gets when one lays eyes upon the misspelled misfortunes of others’ skins.

Sometimes people don’t get it. They think it’s quite ok getting Tengwar gibberish. “It doesn’t matter” they say. “The letters are beautiful and nobody’s gonna read them anyway” they say. But they are

WЯONG

It matters! There are people who’s gonna read them! Now you’re gonna read the tattoos below and understand how it feels when you can read awful elvish tattoos. BEHOLD:

Who is life?

Because if you never don't give up then you always won't succeed.

So,

How does it feel? Would you facepalm them or compliment their beautiful letters? That’s how we (the ones who know Quenya and/or Sindarin) feel when we see tattoos that don’t make sense. I mean, they tried and they felt short. They may look cool and awsome, but they’re not. And the moral of the story is: LEARN how to WRITE first, then get a TATTOO! Be it English, be it Japanese, be it Quenya! It’s golden rule for them all!

Not all those who wander are lost 4

He did it TOO!

Fernando Tadeu Ginez Fabretti

Fernando Tadeu Ginez Fabretti

For the 4th time, I come here before ye all, to praise a Tolkiendil who permanently and most poetically had that immortal saying marked on his skin. Fernando from Brazil (holy shit! His hometown is my girl’s!!!!) has become part of the club, the exclusive Quenya101 club. From now on he shall be known here as The One Who Wanders In Brazil. Alongside The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The ForceThe One With The BirdiesThe One With The TimeThe One With Things To Be SeenThe One With Ainulindalë & The One Who Loves Her Sister. Behold his ink:

Not all those who wander are lost Fernando

Queni ya ranya ullumë vanwë umir

A cool guy from a cool place and with lots of things in common. While checking some photos of his, I realized the guy plays Flag Football! Amazing! I never thought there was such an organized Flag in Brazil!

Flag

I don’t know why, when, how is he playing it, he never talked to me before about it. It looks like he’s a cornerback from most of the pics I saw. I’d love if he could tell here about that (I’m really curious). Also….I’m dying to know if there’s any chance he knows my girlfriend? She lives where he lives! Great coincidence! Anyway….

Alice

e Giorgia, sempre insieme!

Alice Rebecca Farina

Alice Rebecca Farina

Ciao, i miei amici! I come before thee this night to celebrate the fraternal love shown between these two Italian sisters, Alice and Giorgia! Above you can see one of them. Alice is a Quenya101 old follower and she got her name composed etymologically into Quenya here a long time ago.

Well, if you are used with Quenya101 posts, now you must have already realized this is a post about a tattoo. Yes…that’s right, but the cool thing is: Alice didn’t get any tattoo. She didn’t get her name tattooed anywhere her skin. HER SISTER did!!!!!

Giorgia Vittoria Farina

Giorgia Vittoria Farina

Absolutely lovely! A laudable act one should be proud of! From now on, Giorgia will be known here as The One Who Loves Her Sister. Alongside The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The ForceThe One With The BirdiesThe One With The TimeThe One With Things To Be Seen & The One With Ainulindalë she’s taken her place in this select group. She deservers all honors! Now behold the reason she does so:

The one was deep and wide and beautiful…

…and so were his!

Vivaldo Lopes

Vivaldo Lopes

In this great day, I joyously announce the commendable tattooS of this Amazonian guy to the whole world to gaze upon in awe for his well-executed idea and be mesmerized by his own tribute to Father Tolkien and the Genesis of all elves, Ainulindalë. Let us sing the song of creation:

Minë né tumnaar palla’r vanya, mal’enca’r quanta únótima nyérëo, yallo vanesserya túlë ambë.

Minë né tumna ar palla’r vanya, mal’enca’r quanta únótima nyérëo, yallo vanesserya túlë ambë.

I exë síenétie’rderya; mal nes róma, ar lusta, ar oialavë vorima; ar haryanes titta rainë

I exë sí enétie’rderya; mal nes róma, ar lusta, ar oialavë vorima; ar haryanes titta rainë

Yes, my fellow ones. Both arms inked with Ainulindalë itself! I praise him highly for such achievement! From now on, he is to be called and remembered here as The One With Ainulindalë. He has become part of our select group composed by: The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The ForceThe One With The BirdiesThe One With The Time & The One With Things To Be Seen.

You can check the exact quote Vivaldo, errr… I mean The One With Ainulindalë took from the Ainulindalë Quenyanna here and here.

For still there are so many things that I have never seen

But she’s seen it!

Chabs Bondoc Baluyut

Once again, more frequently than ever, I bring forth to ye all, the laudatory post dedicated to this beautiful Filipino girl who recently have enhanced her beauty with something full of meaning to us all (including Bilbo Baggins, of course). Perhaps you haven’t seen it, but now you will! Behold:

An eä er rimbë engwer ya ullumë ecénien.

Not only she got that tattooed, but she even documented extensively all the painful process of getting a tattoo at her Facebook. Tough girl!

From now on, she will be remembered and named here The One With Things To Be Seen and will be part of our exclusive Quenya101 Hall of Fame  composed so far by The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The ForceThe One With The Birdies & The One With The Time. (7 People and many more to come! There has been a flood of tattoos popping out everywhere!)

You can find this Bilbo’s quote translated into Quenya here as well as many other ones. If your favorite quote is not added yet, just request it!

A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

He shot it!

Scott Wall

With great honor I, Erunno Alcarinollo, come before ye all, to commend my military man, Scott Wall due to his laudable deed, full of beauty and deep meaning. Like the old knights of Rohan and Gondor, he fights for our realm, to protect us and deliver us from the enemy. NOW, he does it with style:

Lúmë melien ar lúmë tevien, lúmë ohtan ar lúmë rainen.

Time. For everything there is an appointed time, even time for every affair under the heavens. And the time came for him to be included in our Hall of Fame! From now on, he shall be called The One With The Time, the 6th agent of our special forces. (The OneThe One In Female FormThe One With The LightThe One With The Force & The One With The Birdies)

Noteworthy to say is that he fights in another galaxies as well! He’s a multi-battle soldier! Way to go, dude!

And below, a complete peak at his art:

In 47 Yávië 140, The One With The Time had his sentence translated into Quenya at the How do we say (…) in Quenya? section. He used FAST LINE (because you know…time is precious) and now we all have the pleasure to see the result on his skin!

Congratulations, Warrior! Mission accomplished!

The Ultimate Elvish Tattoo Collection

This is an important post! It’s a warning to everyone who thinks to get some “elvish tattoo”.  Think twice, thrice, 264 times before you get a tattoo in a language or alphabet you don’t have enough knowledge to read by yourself. Here it’s a compilation of wrong tattoos. It will be updated constantly when a tattoo pops up deserving to be part of this collection. It’s a tragedy when someone who truly wishes to pay a tribute to Tolkien and his work, has a gibberish tattoo permanently inked on one’s skin. I weep for them! On the other hand, it’s really  funny to mock  those who want to show off how nerdy and well skilled in elvish they are with their “only-an-illiterate-elf-would-read-that-because-it-makes-no-sense” tattoo. So, please…whatever your motivations are to get something tattooed in Tengwar, please check A LOT before getting it. Perhaps learn a little bit how Tengwar works. It’s not hard. Quenya101 can help you to learn it! Behold now the ultimate elvish tattoo collection (the freaking bad ones):

What is wrong?

The common mistakes are:

  • Getting any Tengwar font and typing it thinking Tengwar would work exactly like the Roman alphabet displayed in the computer keyboard. The end result are always something like “sdghtrwfeyuhjk”. Surprisingly, people tattoo that!
  • Confusing Tengwar Modes and getting a tattoo for instance, in English with the writing rules of Quenya, Sindarin or any other language. It’s a detail, but it makes a whole difference. E.g.: instead of Fernando in Spanish, one might get Frenand o. People don’t pay attention to details and get them tattooed!
  • Choosing a Tengwar font (the worst for the job: Tengwar Gandalf) and not observing the tehtar positions for that particular font. There are some variations among Tengwar fonts. They are very small sometimes, but to the literate eye, they are clear to observe, they are right there! It’s lik ty pin g th is wya. See? People get tehtar weirdly positioned and have them tattooed all the time!
  • Paying someone to supposedly write something in elvish when clearly this someone has a very limited knowledge! Would you like to spend $30 to get some gibberish elvish writing and tattoo it? With our dear Starchamber site, YOU CAN! People spend money on that and they get tattoos without realizing the joke is on them!

So,

…the golden rule is: LEARN before you get something tattooed! ASK someone who really knows what one is tolkien about! RESEARCH thoroughly in sources with linguistic credentials. There are many Tolkien linguistics studies who can be checked BEFORE you get some ink you’ll regret for the rest of your mortal life! I wish you all a healthy and well decorated skin!

Not all those who wander are lost 3

And she did it too!

Priscilla Ortiz

Once again, with great pleasure and joy of heart, I, Erunno Alcarinollo, bring forth to the eyes of all elves, men, dwarves and hobbits here gathered the beauty of the lady above from Utah and the surpassingly splendorous decoration she used in her skin. BEHOLD:

Queni ya ranya ullumë vanwë umir

From now on, Priscilla Ortiz shall not be her name. She has taken part alongside the selected club of people (The One, The One In Female Form, The One With The Light & The One With The Force) and she will be referred to as: The One With The Birdies.

Instead of getting the sentence in “Tengwar English Mode for the weak ones” (full of its inaccuracies) she went for the uttermost legit thing: Quenya! Much better as Tengwar was meant for writing Quenya (not English).

Laitanyel, wendë! (I praise you, lady!)
